Our approach

How we work.

Four steps, five principles and one promise: where the money goes is always easy to find.

How it works

Four steps in every programme.

Whatever the programme, the work follows the same path.

  1. 01

    Start with the person

We begin by listening to the people the work is for, and to the place they live in.

  2. 02

    Plan as partners

People help decide what gets built, from the first conversation. Help is offered as partnership.

  3. 03

    Stay for the long run

Local needs change slowly and trust takes years. We plan to stay.

  4. 04

    Show how it grew

We share what is possible and how it grew, and where the money went.

Our principles

Five principles, in practice.

What each principle means, and what it looks like day to day.

Compassionate

We start with the person, not the programme.

What it means

Every piece of work begins with a person and what they need, not with a template we already own. We listen first, and let what we hear decide what we build.

In practice

  • Listening comes before planning.
  • A programme is shaped around the people it is for.

Dignified

Help is offered as partnership, never as pity.

What it means

People are partners in their own progress. We speak with them, not about them, and we show people as they are, with respect.

In practice

  • Decisions are made with the people they affect.
  • People are shown with respect, never as objects of pity.

Hopeful

We show what is possible and how it grew.

What it means

Hope is easier to believe when it can be traced. We show what is possible and the steps by which it grew, so that others can see the way.

In practice

  • We share how things grew, not only where they ended up.
  • We show what is possible plainly, without exaggeration.

Rooted

Local people, local needs, long relationships.

What it means

Good work belongs to the place where it happens. We work with local people on local needs, and we stay long enough to be trusted.

In practice

  • Local people lead on what is needed.
  • Relationships are measured in years, not events.

Transparent

Where the money goes is always easy to find.

What it means

Money given in trust should never be hard to trace. Where it goes is easy to find, and easy to ask about.

In practice

  • Accounts are written in plain language.
  • Registrations, reports and financial statements live in one place: the Transparency page.

Our vision

A society where every person has the means and the dignity to flourish.
